I have always been interested in nature and have taken many trips camping, hiking and bird watching. I also like to garden and love learning about plants. After moving to Boulder, CO, I started spending time at the Denver Science and Nature Museum drawing from their dioramas. I draw and paint only animals that I had seen in the wild, except in the artwork, Closing the Door . . . Forever. Unfortunately, Passenger Pigeons are extinct, but I was able to draw the ones exhibited in a diorama at the DSNM to use as references.
In 2022, Joan published a book of her paintings titled Painting Colorado: A Watercolor Journal. For more information about the book and to view sample pages, go to Publications.
